Why we need Spiritual Communion (and how to have it) when we are unable to attend Mass

  • As Catholics, we know the Eucharist is true bread from heaven for our journey towards Eternal Life.
  • When it is not possible to receive the sacrament (in Church) (e.g., due to wars, disasters, or COVID-19 restrictions) we still need to participate at Mass, by our desire for full union with Christ, through the practice of Spiritual Communion
  • Spiritual Communion was praised by St John Paul II and recommended by saints who were masters of the spiritual life (Sacramentum Caritatis, 55).
  • When we watch the Mass online, there is an opportunity to make a Spiritual Communion, using the prayer by St. Alphonsus Liguori
    • My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things and I desire you with all my heart. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already in my heart and unite myself to you completely. Please do not let me ever by separated from you.
